Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and outcome of treatment for cancer of the external auditory canal(EAC) and analyze the survival rate and propose a treatment modality.

Materials and Methods: Retrospective case series of 11 patients who had surgery or radiation therapy between 1996 and 2005 at Chungbuk National University Hospital. Data on age, sex, symptoms, TNM status, histopathological diagnosis, surgery, adjunctive radiation therapy and status at follow-up were obtained.

Results: Nine of 11 patients were male. Age distribution was between 20s and 80s and 50s show peak incidence. Five had T1 stage tumor (45.5%), 2 had T2 stage tumor (18.2%), 3 had T3 stage tumor (27.3%), 1 had T4 stage tumor (9.1%). Five year survival rate was as follows: T1 and T2 stage (86%), T3 and T4 stage (50%). Nine of 11 patients had squamous cell carcinoma and one had adenoid cystic carcinoma and the other had basal cell carcinoma.

Conclusion: The 5 year survival rate related to the stage of the disease, suggesting early detection and precise diagnosis of EAC cancer are crucial for good results. Early cancer need a less aggressive surgical approach with good result, while advanced cancer need wide resection and adjuvant radiotherapy with poor result.
